“My practice explores the relationship between the visibility of space and its level of conscious perception through painting. I investigate how artificial lighting empowers the individual to control visibility, manipulate attention, and subjectively separate important from secondary locations in contrast to unbiased natural light. I question the influence of environment on human self-perception. I am interested in the assertion that the environment shapes us as individuals, so I view my pictorial spaces as metaphors for the mind. I am interested in the idea of space not only as a repository of personal memories, but also as a carrier of ideology or national identity. In different periods of my practice, I have considered spaces both as a deeply subjective experience and as a social product.”
