"ABOUT MYSELF"

Winzavod Art Center, 4 Syromyatny Lane, 1/8, building 9, entrance 22
"Nadezhda Kosinskaya is a St. Petersburg-based artist whose works are intensively rotated at auctions, fairs, and group contemporary art shows, but for the Moscow viewer this exhibition is the first opportunity to see her art in volume and variety.
From her earliest works, Kosinskaya's signature is recognizable. Author's mix of academic training and naive painting techniques allows the artist to speak in the first person on the most obvious and difficult topics (relationships, everyday life, motherhood, family) while staying within the professional conventions. When she put aside the brush and pencil and began to create an image with thread or nails, elements of sincere, as if inept drawing moved into the new material. Separately, it should be noted that with Kosinskaya nails lose their modernist industrial masculine penetrating pathos, turning into the exact opposite: needles, scales, hairs, strokes. This works for the image: shimmering and shimmering metal rods disembodied the depicted, making him either a shadow or a ghost, while the steel fur, which is torn in places, adds a sense of vulnerability.
Speaking of the thread as an artistic medium, the artist emphasizes the metaphor of the link between the author and the work, the mother and the child. This connection is by no means mechanical, stable and forever given. The images of children made in this technique are full of anxiety. The little bent calf and its segments are repeatedly groped with a curly line, fastened together, outlined, guarded, but from these efforts the feeling of defenselessness only increases.
The heroes of Kosinskaya's work are both people and things slightly clumsy, fragile, as if they are awkward and present in this world by omission, without solid legal foundations or ontological connections to it. Their corporeality is shaky and prone to deformation, to thinning. In the space of a painting or a graphic sheet, they tend to fade somewhere from the center to the edge and stand shyly still there. The subject of the application of her lyrical gift is vulnerable and victimized, and the surrounding space (or rather emptiness) is indifferent, cold and surreal. The unsteadiness, the possibility of a quick disappearance without trace, the lack of strength and anger to assert their boundaries make every moment of the characters' lives potentially last and thus significant. Each glance of the artist at them becomes an act of love, an experience of acute sadness, a premonition of impending loss.
Kosinskaya's oeuvre fits into a silent but enduring line of Russian art that reproduces itself in different eras from Pavel Fedotov to Gennady Ustyugov or Anya Zholud. It is not a question of schooling, borrowing or continuity. It is simply that national history, prone to repetition, nurtures a neurotic, heavy social milieu time after time. In response, an artist emerges, lyrically and painfully living the traumatic hopelessness of everyday life, discerning in small fragments of everyday life a great tragedy, giving the general mute anxiety a visual embodiment."

“My first works using metal appeared in 2019. At some point, I began to work closely in the classical techniques of painting and graphics .. I wanted to expand the boundaries, opportunities. I tried to use nails, metal, to create images .. I liked the structure of this material, graphic and painterly at the same time. Gradually, I began to think with this material, it corresponded to my inner state, allowed me to express myself most clearly. I automatically "tried on" this technique to what I see, I feel that I want to portray. Some of the works are done expressively, in a fit. Others are typed methodically, step by step, day after day. The process of work turns into meditation, immersion. The metal surface resembles armor, a kind of protection from the outside world. Often, in addition to metal, I include other materials in my work - fabrics, plaster. I create a relief painting surface. A lively, emotional message is important ”. Nadezhda Kosinskaya
