a—s—t—r—a open vol.5

30.07 – 07.09.2024

CCA Winzavod, entrance n8

On July 30, the fifth edition of the annual project a—s—t—r—a open is a series of group exhibitions, during which the gallery space becomes a place of institutional debut, testing of new ideas and a platform for artistic dialog - was opened at a-s-t-r-a gallery of contemporary art. The a—s—t—r—a open exhibitions are held twice a year - in winter and summer.

Within the framework of this initiative, a—s—t—r—a continues the main line of its activity is discovering new names, experimenting and testing hypotheses. The gallery does not set any formal restrictions, which, within the framework of the Open Call, makes it possible to gather interesting combinations of participants and present both completely unknown names and works by established authors.

Sergey BoyarintsevBoris Bragin, Alexander Gordeev, Alyosha Geld, Anastasia Geraskina, Marina Glebova, Marina Grekova, Anna Demina, Yulia Dibrova, Alyona Zhandarova, Dmitry Zakunov, Katitsia, Katya na Khate, Maria Katyanova, Alina Koryakina, Katya Kosova, Anna Lageda, Vera Latysheva, Anton Lytaev, Olga Menzhiliy, Anastasia Myachina, Yulia Nemova, Ekaterina Nikitina, Igor Nikolaenko, Marina Niko, Alexander Platonov, Lubov Remizova, Vika Ros, Victor Skopets, Lena Taganpva, Alexandra Timasheva, Alexey Frolov-Bagreev, Lena Kholkina, Donna Tserne, Timur EtotYuriy Yushkin, Katya Yanova, AEVGENIK, AI Artist Leyla Karipova, Danil Danot, GALOLBO, Grisha Danunaher, sashonichka.

43 selected artists

750 applications that fit the criteria stated in the open call

800+ portfolio submissions

20 countries

146 cities

With this project the gallery shows that there is a conditional “elevator” on the art market and that working on one's career, artist statement and portfolio makes sense and gives concrete results: exposure to a large audience, sales and for some authors - further full-fledged cooperation with a—s—t—r—a gallery.

The fifth issue of a—s—t—r—a open is realized in co-authorship with guest curators - the newnow team (Margo Makarova and Uley Savich). The main idea behind a—s—t—r—a open vol.5 is to “turn inside out” the process behind the selection and formation of a new pool of authors. The gallery's exhibition space will take the form of a sketchbook for pins, sketches, notes: how the team thinks, what they pay attention to, what meanings the artists are addressing, what the stats are made of, what comes to the forefront and what remains behind the brackets. This is a project about how the field of research is narrowed down to a few names in a limited space, and the curator becomes an interlocutor.

For the founder of a—s—t—r—a gallery, Alina Kryukova, it is fundamental to keep the gallery's activities faithful to the logic chosen when opening the permanent space - to be a place of expanding the horizon of opportunities for as many interested people as possible. That is why at each exhibition the team tries to show as many names as possible, despite the limited space of the gallery.

In the framework of a—s—t—r—a open vol.5 also planned a parallel program, including artistic practices of action and conversations with invited experts.

“There are works that can be called “incidental” in the work of great artists: sketches, sketches, random scribbles on paper. These 'auxiliary' works were often done in passing, with the simplest means, with cheap materials. Such works have a special effect on me; I find in them a specific expressiveness that serves as a basis for my own work. In my works I try to adhere to a certain laconism and asceticism, I use a limited set of technical methods and visual elements, I prefer small formats and available materials. Strictly speaking, I am a graphic artist. I believe that even my works, which formally belong to painting, are in fact at the point where painting and graphics come into contact and cannot be confidently attributed to either.”

The Crosses project

At some point I realized I wanted to choose one element that would recur in most of my works and unite them into one vast series. I chose the cross as such an element and I did so for several reasons: it is a symmetrical geometric figure, it is associated with many meanings, it is one of the key elements in the history of Western visual art. My crosses do not refer to anything specific, religious, they are laconic signs, open to any possible readings, self-sufficient, like a pattern on the surface of paper.

“My work explores the themes of doubt, fears and memory through personal experience and inner world. I am convinced that doubts and fears play a significant role in our lives, they shape our thoughts, decisions and actions. My work aims to explore these emotions and their influence on our behavior. Through the use of various techniques and materials, I aim to evoke an emotional response in the viewer and provoke reflection on my own doubts and fears. My work also addresses the theme of memory and its impact on our perception of the past and present, for example after the death of loved ones, or an uncertain home. Through my works, I encourage the viewer to reflect on how our own doubts and fears can affect our lives and how we can keep our memory alive to overcome these emotions and develop ourselves as individuals.”

“What is most interesting in painting is painting. The aspirations in creativity may seem purely technical - to paint a picture harmonious in composition, to achieve a color sound. But in fact it is the very deep and meaningful process of creation, the birth of painting. Painting already exists, all around, everywhere. It is only necessary to bring to clarity what is at hand. To try to create, to bring out the sound-color in the material.

For me, painting is not a means of presenting any ideas, it is a touch to the fundamentals of life. And that is its unshakable value; always a causeless love.

The feeling of joy and meaning arises when something seems to have turned out, when something is lit up with colors on the surface. Any surface: canvas, cardboard, wood, a piece of stone...most often, I like to paint on materials that have already lived. Or not as neat and clean as a white canvas. Slightly torn plywood or “modest” cardboard is closer to life and to painting. It happens that something delicate, such as a flower, is easier to depict on a rough surface. The soul experiences beauty, often through pain or unsightliness.

The theme of flowers growing from the bottom edge of the “canvas” has become one of the central themes for me. It is as if the flower concentrates many meanings and different images relating to the most important moments of life.

Still life is always a pleasant subject. A pleasant opportunity to “communicate” with different forms and favorite objects, although here too, for me, the object, that is, matter, gives way to a sense of color. In still life paintings I always intuitively choose to paint subjects whose form and essence is simple and comprehensive. For example, a bowl or bread. Or a glass. Or, of course, an apple, as one Great Artist of the past had it....

I often turn to the subject of abstraction. But abstract painting is not something separate from other genres. There is a common thread of painting in everything for me, landscape, portraits and abstraction. Whatever subject I paint, it is the desire for light that is important. It is an inner process, a struggle, and sometimes its complete absence.

What does an artist want from his work? I would like the human viewer to be filled with the energy of light and purity when looking at my works.”

She lives and works in Moscow.

Educated at Udmurt State University in Applied Informatics in Design (2005). Graduated from the Moscow School of Contemporary Art in the Contemporary Art program (2024).

Marina Grekova works with questions of time and memory. The artist finds answers to these questions through various experiments, collecting photographs of changing textures, working with family archives, creating prints on fabric with rust from old metal objects that have a history of use in everyday life. In this way, the artist finds the keys for answers to understand how the world works and how we perceive it, transmit information to each other, emotions we experience by creating non-verbal languages. Experiments can be in different directions, such as painting, graphics, collages, video art, performance, music, dance.

“I choose light, white color and garden as a metaphor for the eternal solitude of man in the world. A metaphor of solitude, where observation of the form and plasticity of light, care of plants become a form of cognition. The white still lifes in my works symbolize the shades of existence, and the light playing on the surface of the glass reflects the fragility of our existence. The three lines of my art merge into one . White color for me is the basis on which I build my compositions. It creates a purity of form that is the perfect canvas for my experiments. Each work of art for me is a journey in which I explore these elements and their interrelationships to create something new and meaningful. Each of my paintings must go through a period of intense emotional immersion, so I work on my paintings for a long time. My painting is built on nuance. Using oil paints and the surface of the canvas, layer by layer I get to the right image.”

“In art I love lightness, suddenness, unpredictability, movement! In my works, I value understatement, so that there is space for the viewer's associations and feelings. The process of working on a painting is not a dry repetition of pre-conceived ideas, but a lively, sensitive and unpredictable process, when unexpectedly flowing paint can become a motive to lead the work on a new. To create a painting, it is important for me to get a vivid visual impression from nature or from inner images. I am convinced that only feelings can change people, so I do not turn to intellectual concepts, but try to get into the soul of the viewer through visual images.”

“To live life is to know and communicate one's experience as accurately as possible-in other words, to create. Art is a good way to create and live.

I express my thoughts in the language I know and in the way I know how, in the form of art objects. They are not translations and cannot be translated into any other language. They are formulas embodied by visual means.

My area of interest is the relationship of man, time, place and their relationship to nothingness.”

“My practice is organized around linguistic and semiotic concerns within the field of the visual -- exploring the internal politics of the gaze and the limits of representation, I work with phenomena such as perception, image origination, literalism, mythological aspects of perception, artistic thinking and memory.

In the project “572, my charm personal” I investigate the remnants of representations of mythological thinking at the interface with algorithmic thinking through the collision of different contextual images.
In the 'in other words' project, I explore the inner workings of art production, the emergence of meaning and the ultimate idea, using and critiquing from within the medium of photography.”

Glebova Marina

Born in Siberia, in the city of Angarsk in 1977. In 2021 she moved to St. Petersburg.

Most of her creative life was engaged in collectible toys. In 2019, she started practicing art. Now is interested in all available mediums.

The artist is interested in both applied techniques (textiles, ceramics, embroidery, papier-mâché) and graphic and pictorial art. Mixing them, she achieves greater freedom in the embodiment of her world, balancing on the edge of the abstract and recognizable.
The artist creates characters and objects that inhabit the space of her personal mythology, memories, feelings and bodily sensations.
She is preoccupied with the small narratives, dreams and nightmares of everyday life; she is attracted to the invisible part of everyday existence: the sphere where our expectations are formed, where neuroses flourish and memories mutate.

“I have been going to plein airs for many years, painting productions from life, studying art history, but I could not fully understand what I wanted to talk about. And only this year I underwent a kind of initiation after deep work with the acceptance of my “I”, working through the theme of shame, phantasms and the inner radical.

In my works I started to address the natural world, the world of simplicity and sincerity. So that the viewer could empathize, feel, find in them what is consonant with himself. I try to convey that elusive feeling when you pour sugar on black bread and butter, when you see fireflies for the first time in your life and can't believe your eyes, or when you come to the river where your father came to swim as a boy, and a few decades later - you. I looked at life through the eyes of an impressionable child, and now I dream of embodying this honesty in my work. I want to immerse the viewer in the comprehension of the most significant images, to connect cultural regional contexts, to demonstrate identity, a common point of support in such a difficult time and to remember the touching and vulnerable that is in each of us.

At this stage I am working with painting, ceramics, connecting science and art through the use of photoluminescent pigment, thanks to the research of which I received my PhD.”

Endowing her own memory with corporeality, each time the artist turns to different mediums that make the perception of the past more multidimensional: fabrics, wallpaper, napkins and lace embroidered by the artist's grandmother, Soviet porcelain - objects from her personal archive are reflected in the collective memory of several generations.

“My artistic practice aims to reveal the connections between past and present in the infinite cycle of life. The emotional paradox of living ambivalent feelings, questions of self-identity through the past, and the exploration of personal narrative through collective memory give birth to man-made objects that evoke the emotional turmoil and peace of encountering the past in a new form. By endowing my own memory with corporeality, each time I turn to different mediums that make the perception of the past more multidimensional: fabrics, wallpaper, napkins and lace embroidered by my grandmother's hands, Soviet porcelain - objects from my personal archive are reflected in the collective memory of several generations. By consciously working without a preconceived sketch, I allow the objects to form and change in the process of interaction of individual elements, like a living organism. The possibility of emotionally reliving past experiences in the present and appropriating the memory of physical manifestation is my way of overcoming the discreteness of memory through the creative act.”

“I am moved by the presence of a living being in this big to infinite, complex world. It is interesting to feel it fully, to see it with my own eyes and to reveal the theme in the language of images. The project reflects my personal perception of the world around me. The feeling of smallness inherent in a person at the beginning of his or her journey and, at the same time, the ease and freedom of moving freely through the big world. Can we really make a difference when the world around us is so colossal? In my work I apply such media as: painting, art object, graphics.”

“Key themes in my art practice are related to issues of agency, problems of communication and the impact of traumatic events on the individual. I work with long-term photographic projects, combining installation form, sculpture, performative video and sound. I am interested in the image of the contemporary person who experiences emotional instability, transitional states between stages of personal and social development. By reinterpreting my experience, exploring elements of my personal archive, it is as if I am an indicator, emphasizing the problems and crises of my generation”

“Women are the protagonists of almost all of my work, and I hope this can be explained by something more original than the usual story of another estranged father.

I have been working with tattooing for the last 13 years. The experience of working with other people's bodies has infiltrated my work unnoticed by myself. Touching, crumpling, pulling, twisting. To smell, to wipe, to shave. To bring pain.

Accepted as a vessel, at times the body feels like a trapped horror movie character. The body, possessed by the consciousness of its owner, is unable to bring about the evolution of its own being through will. It looks tragically in the mirror and tries to remember when everything went wrong. To remember who it really is. A poor, majestic creature. A naked spirit hiding in plain sight.

A body an obsession. A friend who is always with you. An entity more dear than a mother, because one day it is from her that we will be born definitively.”

“The lack of trust in the real is a major fulcrum for my work. In my practice, I actively explore the theme of anti-reality and create works composed of natural and figurative fantasies. When working with canvas or objects, I exorcise the literal manifestation of the human being, favoring fragments or emptiness, but at the same time such emptiness still suggests a human presence figuratively.”

"The Absence" Project

This series is a large part of a new body of work that explores the theme of “absence” in our physical world. I am inspired by the theory of anti-reality, where I find myself searching for an alternative way of existing outside of three-dimensional space. The walls, furniture, windows and rooms into which I immerse shadows serve as a world of understandable things that seem solid and reliable. Some objects such as pillows serve as a “portal” to the dream world in which we spend a third of our lives. The shadowy images on the canvases have a life of their own. I have endowed them with the ability to exist as silent informational copies of our reality. But without the dressiness of a world in which we try to conform to something.

Born in Angarsk in 1991, lives and works in St. Petersburg.

In her practice she explores the subject's self-definition in the modern world. Examines how the modern subject reflects on his emotions, dreams and memories in a world of global overproduction of goods and images, in which everything is turned into a product of buying and selling. Attempts to understand how identity is constructed in the age of mass culture and how archetypal images influence it. Often addresses the theme of personal and collective memory and the feelings that the subject has towards his own past.

In his projects the artist works with images taken from everyday life and personal memories. Using the collage method, she combines these images with cultural symbols, timeless signs, which help to reveal the subject's inner feelings, as well as the presence of the unreal in the everyday.

Blends different mediums, combines painting and photography with metal casting, and creates images that transcend the boundaries of the two-dimensional plane. This method allows the artist to reveal how present and past events, feelings, and childhood narratives are intertwined in the subject's inner world and how they influence the perception of the present.

"The Sleeping Beauty" project

“In this project I work with an ironic reflection on my own self-reflection. Starting from the plot of the fairy tale “Sleeping Beauty”, I turn to the theme of romanticizing the suffering hero. The hundred-year dream in which the heroine immerses herself becomes the starting point for reflection on the permanent state of waiting for happiness. I am interested in exploring the contemporary cultural context in which the suffering hero becomes an attractive role model, replicated and commercialized. We encounter this image in literature, music, movies, and fairy tale narratives. In my project, I propose to reinterpret the archetypal image of the suffering princess and reflect on how it influences the behavioral patterns we unconsciously reproduce in our lives. The mirror included in the exhibition asks the viewer the humorous question “will I ever be happy”?”

“I work with different materials. For the last year I have been working and experimenting a lot with ceramics. This material gives me more freedom and helps me to express my thoughts more clearly. Being able to add color to a sculpture, I think, completes its concept in a more coherent way. It is important for me to be able to put aside excessive academicism, to keep in my head all the experience I have gained, to make sincere and lively works. In sculpture I am interested in creating a separate space. For me it is a kind of scenography. Just as children play with soldiers and dolls, learning about the world, so I explore it through objects and my characters. I am not only interested in the individual, but also in society as a whole. In my works, society is experienced through art, becomes the source of destruction or oppression of a particular character, does not notice a looming threat, and is the bearer of a cultural code. Man and society. The artist and the viewer. Man and culture, traditions. Man and man. Society and the world. These are the themes I discuss in my art.”

“I was born in Kaliningrad and grew up moving around the country and Europe. The changing reality around me required new forms of adaptation each time. The first such way was childhood collecting - my own archive. The exploration of reality moved into my artistic practice: I conceptualize the world around me in social and existential themes, and capture it through metaphors and symbols. Interacting with the attributes and templates of past culture allows me to find its labels in the present. I am interested in the space in which today's society is formed, how it affects the individual and vice versa. The techniques of topoanalysis help me in understanding the phenomenon of space. As an author I work in the field of visual art, my main medium is hand printing. It is important for me to remain open and sincere, to speak to the viewer in a visually poetic, metaphorical language.”

Katya na Khata is the pseudonym of artist Katerina Menshikova.

Born in Yekaterinburg, she lives and works in Moscow.

Studying at the Stroganov University in two opposite artistic departments resulted in a single artistic style - laundering, which appears in most of her works.

After completing her basic education, the artist continued to develop in the field of art. But she chose the human body as her canvas. Since 2017, her attention has been absorbed by her work with people, which began the next decade of integrating her artistic vision into her chosen format.
The events that are currently taking place in our country and in the world have encouraged her to return to the classical representation of images in the format of canvases.
The artist returned to revealing the form through the layering of colors in gradation from glare to falling shadow, to the tonal elaboration of the object. Through the monochrome image I try to convey to the viewer exclusively the sensations on which she herself is concentrated.

EDUCATION:

  • 2023 — HSE, Alexandra Mitlyanskaya's course “Video Time”

“Over the last four years, the world under our feet has cracked. There was a split into two camps, where half of the people left, changed, adapted to new living conditions. For some people this crack served as a good forced jerk, forced circumstances, when the choice of a place to live became unambiguous.

I stayed in Russia, unwittingly witnessing very similar stories, imbued with longing and loneliness inside the noisy newfound metropolis. I became an observer of our age-old staples, which, it seemed, would not affect us.
Became a participant in them against all odds.

Outside of troubled times, I often romanticized other people's emigration, as broadcasting the beautiful life on social media never showed me the other side. The slogan “bread and spectacle” has become the manifesto of our time. Life in the new microclimate has been stripped of its former utopias, epitomizing only the perishability of existence.

As a result, all the images in the paintings began to reflect a native homesickness, where in the landscapes of another country I still search with my eyes for the attributes of my flawed homeland. I look for places that are associated with simple basic feelings - happiness, security and tranquility.”

“I love stories, and stories love me, the main thing is to have time to write down the story in a notebook, so that it does not run away and is not forgotten. And then to transfer it to paper. And so that color doesn't distract, my stories are in black and white. Like old photographs, like dreams.

Every story has a conflict, a contradiction, even when there is no hero, no active character. There are stories that are real and stories that are fictional, but each of them is an imprint, a slice of our everyday life.

My mission as an artist is to share these stories with the world.”

Zakunov Dmitriy

Dmitry Zakunov is an artist working in the technique of chronophotography, which is based on shooting at a
long shutter speed.

Dmitry Zakunov was born in 1986 in Nizhny Novgorod. In 2012 he studied photography at the University of New Mexico (USA), inspired by the works of photographers Joel-Peter Witkin and Patrick Nagatani, whose names are closely connected with this university.

The process of visual deformation and deconstruction of the figures of the models in the photo, forms photodynamic compositions that address the state of dreams, hallucinations, subconscious images, reconstructing space according to new patterns. His work has been influenced by the photodynamic images of Anton Giulio Bragaglia, the works of Alexey Titarenko, Javi Bou, the paintings of Lucien Freud and Francis Bacon.

Exhibiting works in different cycles - “Familiar Faces”, “Approaching Dusk”, “Psychopathology of Everyday Life”, Dmitry addresses psychology, mysticism and the theme of everyday life through the artistic method of chronophotography, showing the hidden plasticity of human body movements.

“Central to my method is the manifestation of the hidden plasticity of human body movements in the process of chronophotographic filming. This method initiates visual experimentation, allowing me to utilize an actual artistic language in the themes and projects I develop. The series of works “Familiar Faces” (2020) explores the phenomenon of prosopagnosia in chronophotographic portraits. The series “Psychopathology of Everyday Life” (2021) visualizes the mental precedents of everyday psychological reality, cautioning and reviving stereotypical images. The project “Synesthesia. Time Tracers” (2023) denotes the inextricable links between auditory and visual perceptual processes through the artistic method of chronophotography. The cycle “Transgression” (2023) uses the transformation of the body as a method of visualizing the changes in a person's personality caused by transitions into new qualities, addressing the phenomenon of transgressive transition. In assembling photodynamic compositions, I use rhythm, form, and color to address the explicit and implicit sensory-logical structures of memory, where enigmatic constructions envelop the depicted object and are filled in by the viewer.”

"10.000 hours" project

Scale-coordinate paper / ink, 30x42 cm.

2020-present.

At the moment 14 sheets out of 100 are finished.

This series can be looked at from several angles and different contents, but the core is neurotic incivility.

On the one hand, there is the saying that any activity needs 10,000 hours to become a professional. In a sense, the arrangement of dots on scale-coordinate paper is an illustration of the time spent to achieve those cherished 10,000 hours.

On the other hand, the series emerged in a period of lockdown, in a situation of stress and uncertainty. Looking at these works from this perspective, they appear to be a visual embodiment of nervousness and anxiety, but at the same time, they are also a way of meditating and detaching from anxiety.

Zhandarova Alyona

Alyona Zhandarova (1988) lives and works in Ivanovo, Russia.

She studied at the European Institute of Design IED, Department of Art Photography in Madirida, Spain.

Alyona feels the world as a single living organism, subtly feeling the invisible connections between all beings, events, the past and what has not yet happened. The themes of the illusory nature of what is happening, its multilayeredness and cyclicality are the anchor point of her artistic practice.

Exploring the forms and structure of interaction between the inner and the outer, Alyona makes an attempt to manifest and organize their relations visually. Absurdity and play are the main methods she uses to translate from the cosmic (invisible) to the human (manifested), in an attempt to find answers to the question “How to remember the magic of a gray day while being absorbed by routine and everyday life?”.

Alyona Zhandarova (1988) lives and works in Ivanovo, Russia.

She studied at the European Institute of Design IED, Department of Art Photography in Madirida, Spain.

The illusory nature of the external world, the exploration of human beliefs and social boundaries, the uniqueness of each person, continuity and the interconnection of inner space with external conditioning are the main areas of Alyona Zhandarova's research. Interacting with the world through photography, she translates her own experience into the language of visual symbols. Alyona was honored with the Zeiss Photography Awards in 2020. Her work has been shown at the International Photography and Art Festival PhEST in Italy in 2021, Aarhus Center for Contemporary Art in Denmark in 2012, Singapore International Photography Festival in Singapore in 2020 and others. Her works are included in the collections of Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts in Japan, Meyrin Cultural Center in Switzerland and many private collections.

Alyona feels the world as a single living organism, subtly feeling the invisible connections between all beings, events, the past and what has not yet happened. The themes of the illusory nature of what is happening, its multilayeredness and cyclicality are the anchor point of her artistic practice.

Exploring the forms and structure of the interaction between the inner and the outer, Alyona makes an attempt to manifest and organize their relationship visually. Absurdity and play are the main methods she uses to translate from the cosmic (invisible) to the human (manifested), in an attempt to find answers to the question “How to remember the magic of a gray day, being absorbed by routine and everyday life?”.

“I take objects that clearly show signs of the work of time. The flaws and blemishes; the rust of iron and the cracks of wood. It's all so in tune with the human condition. His fragility; his vulnerability; but also his resilience in the face of adversity. My message is the quiet sadness of human existence as opposed to the superficial glamor of trying to glamorize reality.
Perhaps the central theme of any of my work is: “Peace as something unattainable. Balance as something momentary”.

“I am currently interested in the intersection of the personal and the political, the virtual and the physical, the mythical and the modern, human interaction with technology, as well as the opposition of visibility/invisibility as the basis of an artist's self-representation. I create my projects based on events that I have personally experienced. As a method I often use inverting and rearranging “background and object”: when silence comes to the foreground against the background of noise, emptiness fills the media, and a sense of security is generated by trauma.”

“The topic that interests me is the disorientation of modern man in the social and information space. Most people feel lost and disoriented in the present day. Therefore, I am interested in finding a secret space - a world-alone. It is in solitude and observation of everyday life that an understanding of the relationship between phenomena is born. This is how I find materials and elements that are close to me in different mediums.”

“In my works it is important for me to talk about the fragility and complexity of the world that I feel, to invite the viewer to talk to the artist and ask for a frank conversation with myself. The world is still amazing, it defies comprehension. There is something truly mystical about the fact that in real and simple images there always remains something that cannot be deciphered.”

SELECTED PROJECTS:

  • 2024 — a—s—t—r—a open.vol. 5, a—s—t—r—a gallery, CCA Winzavod, Moscow

He is a member of the Union of Artists of Russia since 2021.

In his works he uses AI, Digital, AR, video and digital photography.

“I work as an Artifical Intelligence artist. Applying AI as a key tool for art making, I explore its role in transforming the creative process and our relationship with technology. My work asks questions about AI's potential to push the boundaries of human creativity and gain a deeper understanding of our individual and collective experiences. I see my role as an artist to be a mediator, addressing the “digital unconscious” guiding a vector to a repository of digital imprints of sensations and feelings, and demonstrating them in visual form. Exploring how the result of this interaction can enrich our understanding of our own sensuality and emotions. Inspired by Jean Baudrillard's ideas on the stages of simulacra, I propose the concept of “Hyperhyperreality” or “Ultrasimulacra” demonstrating how AI-enabled art reveals the fifth stage of image development. At this stage, reality and its artificial replications merge, giving rise to new forms of existence, inclining us to rethink notions of authenticity and identity. Through my work I explore this hyper-hyper-reality, how digital art can stimulate us to think about what really makes us human and offers us the opportunity to take a fresh look at the inner world and the surrounding reality. where AI not only rethinks the shaping of reality, but also invites us to question traditional understandings of feelings, emotions, identity itself and the nature of perception.”

«The Sins» Project

The Sins, a series of works by which I explore the seven deadly sins of mankind: Avaritia - avarice, greed, self-interest - is, like lust or gluttony, a sin of desire, Superbia - arrogance, pride, etc. The question of sin and virtue is one of the eternal questions that have tormented mankind throughout the ages. Many have tried to give a final, final solution to this question, how sin and virtue are correlated, what is the boundary after which virtue becomes sin. All works are created in collaboration with AI: it is the base of generalized human experience and history on a given topic and analyzes the “collective unconscious”, creating a kind of social construction. As an artist, I contribute my subjective experiences, thoughts and impressions based on my emotions and life experience. This is a symbiosis of the collective - formal and the personal - sensual. The viewer himself plays an important role here, determining his attitude to the work. Behind the pictures of sin and virtue lies beauty and morality. To divide into black and white, sinful and right, the task of terrifying freedom of human choice.

The fact of possible doubling, layering, has influenced my artistic practice, which has become dominated by multi-exposure and complex images that shine through each other. This mutual interplay of spaces and exploring the emergence of new ones became my focus.”

GALOLBO

The development of artificial intelligence, the creation of virtual universes, and the digitization of all aspects of modern human life serve as reasons for me to create works that are real and tangible physically.

“The development of artificial intelligence, the creation of virtual universes, and the digitization of all aspects of modern man's life serve as an excuse for me to create works that are real and tangible physically. Found objects are incorporated into my paintings, sculptures, installations and performances. Working with the life quilt as my primary medium, it is as if I am preserving the 'corporeality' of material, human and non-human agents in my works.”

“The subject of my research is the problematics of the relationship between local and global contexts, the issues of identity as an unalienated and safe space. Through this, I seek to analyze the formation of the image of the Other and identity as such, shaped, among other things, by socio-cultural, economic-political factors and generational traumas. I also explore how social conflicts affect the creation of collective history and the reflection of its narratives in the individual. My identity has been shaped by the Soviet and post-Soviet contexts and then transformed by different cultural environments. As a consequence, I experience the phenomenon of “cultural erasure” and changing identities.

In my projects I try to understand how, for people exposed to globalization and historical collisions, the experience of the past is reflected, whether it can be replaced by alternative experiences, how personal and social memory works in such a case, and how what binds collectivities can manifest. I work at the intersection of different media such as public art, installation, sculpture, painting and ceramics. Through this integrated approach, I aim to emphasize the complexity and multifaceted nature of both the local social environment and the individual.”

“I believe that an artist is an instrument that responds to any change in the 'collective unconscious'. For me, the source of inspiration is the rapid transformation of the technogenic world and its impact on modern man.
It is important for me to convey the feeling of dissolution of personality in the information flow, and I build my aesthetics under the impression of the era of virtual reality. I am interested in the emotional content of the drama of our time: high technology, the defenselessness of man “on the net”, socio-cultural and internal contradictions. The internal conflict of the individual and the external when we are faced with the need to interact with society.”
