SERIES "GHOSTS"
In the series Lina Hasanova rethinks painting as a craft, and touches on the relationship between artificial intelligence and man.
At first glance, the paintings seem to be just picturesque collages. In fact, most of the images are generated using artificial algorithms. Based on a huge database of digital photo archives and preset parameters, the neural network embeds into work what it considers a person, a tree or a house. But these are only images of "man" or "tree" – they have never existed and will not exist.
The artist explores how artificial intelligence works with these images. With full-face and three-quarter portraits, he copes quite successfully. The faces have a clear structure – the location of the eyes, nose, mouth, chin, eyebrows are set initially, and it is enough to impose randomly selected parameters of age, gender, etc. on this frame and get a convincing image of a person.
However, the seemingly obvious patterns in the structure of trees or the poses of people are not yet so simple for neural networks and are not reproduced so qualitatively by them. Therefore, looking at the trees in Lina's paintings, you can notice their pretentious unnaturality: they are clumsy, chaotic and clumsy. Inaccuracies and conventions that we do not understand in reality or photography, but we fully expect from painting.
Striving for realism, the neural network does not achieve it, but neuro-trees paradoxically look convincingly picturesque.
